How To Join
Fill out our registration form
Tell us a few things like your name, email, and if you’re learning Japanese or English. We’ll use this information to make a guest list.
Wait for the event link
A few days before the event we’ll send you a confirmation email and link to the online chat.
Join the event
At the specified time, click your event link in the email or your calendar to join our online event.
Event Contents
Events are roughly 1 hour.
Depending on the number and type of participants, we slightly change the structure of the event.
Equal or around equal number of Japanese and English speakers:
After our introduction, we will put participants in breakout rooms for 1-to-1 chatting. We will provide you with conversation topics, resources, and games. These breakout sessions last about 25 minutes, and you’re encouraged to speak both English and Japanese.
After the time is done we will give a 5 minute break, then shuffle and assign new breakout rooms for the second round.
After the second round is over, we will do our closing announcements and the event will be over.
If we have very few participants or uneven types of participants:
We may or may not use breakout rooms and instead do a full session as a group using games. Everybody will have a chance to speak and participate.
Things To Know
What do I need to join?
Our events take place on Google Meet, so you will need to use a Google account (Gmail).
You can join through your computer or a smart device (phone, tablet).
We ask everyone to keep their camera and microphone on during the event when speaking to others. You can turn them off when we give a presentation or instructions, or when you need to take a quick break.
Do I need to be good at Japanese to join?
No, not at all!
Our native Japanese speakers are also wanting to speak and practice their English with you, so even true beginners or Japanese-curious will be able to participate.
With that said, we ask all participants to make an effort to learn. We actively monitor for people who are not participating for learning purposes such as for dating or solicitation.
What if I need to cancel, I'm running late, there's a problem etc?
